Custom Home Design

Custom Home Architecture and Interiors. One Firm. One Vision.

Brickmoon Design’s residential architecture practice is built around a simple conviction: a custom home should be a direct expression of the people who live in it — their values, their rhythms, their definition of beauty. The firm combines architecture and interior design under one roof, with founder Jeremy McFarland personally involved in every project from the first conversation through construction completion.

The result isn’t just a well-built home. It’s a place that means something.

Custom Home Design Process

A custom home is one of the most consequential investments a family makes. Brickmoon’s process is built to protect that investment at every stage — through rigorous site analysis, integrated design, and hands-on construction oversight from a licensed architect.

Initial Consultation

We listen first. We ask about lifestyle, family dynamics, long-term goals, and what hasn’t worked about every home before this one. We visit the site before drawing a single line — because the land shapes the architecture as much as the client does.

Site Analysis & Feasibility

Every constraint is mapped: utilities, setbacks, flood zones, solar orientation, drainage, and view corridors. Difficult sites are design opportunities. Steep slopes produce better views. Odd geometries produce more interesting plans.

Conceptual Design & 3D Renderings

Clients experience the home before it’s built. Full 3D walkthroughs show how natural light moves through the spaces, how rooms connect, and how the home sits on the land. Changes happen here — not during construction.

Detailed Design Development

Every material, window, finish, and fixture is specified. Interior design develops in parallel with architecture — kitchen layouts coordinate with plumbing, lighting design informs ceiling structure, finish selections work with the building envelope. Nothing is an afterthought.

Permitting & Building Approval

Brickmoon manages the full permitting process across Houston, Austin, and surrounding jurisdictions. We handle official review, answer agency questions, and see the project through to final approval.

Construction Administration

We make regular site visits throughout the build. Work is verified against the approved drawings. Field questions are answered before they become expensive deviations. The project ends with a final walkthrough confirming every detail meets the design intent.

Custom Home Design Styles

You’re not locked into one style. We work across the full spectrum.

Material and Finish Selections

Colors, textures, and finishes are the difference between a house and a home. The wrong finish disconnects an entire room.

Why Choose Brickmoon Design for Custom Home Design

Learn more about the Brickmoon Design firm and the experience behind every project in Texas.

  • The Founder Is on Every Project. Jeremy McFarland brings 27+ years of architectural experience to every engagement. He doesn’t hand projects off. Clients work with him from the first meeting through construction completion.
  • Architecture and Interior Design Under One Roof. Most firms require clients to coordinate two separate teams. Brickmoon doesn’t. The result is a single coherent vision from structure to final room, not two disciplines reconciled at the end.
  • 100+ Completed Projects. Difficult sites, complex permitting, tight timelines. That experience shows in how problems get anticipated rather than discovered mid-construction.
  • Award-Winning Track Record. Houston’s Best Prism Award, multiple Star Awards, and consecutive Best of Houzz recognition. Seventeen years of work, validated by clients and industry peers.
  • Style Without Signature. Brickmoon doesn’t have a house style. The firm is equally fluent in modern, traditional, transitional, farmhouse, Hill Country vernacular, and coastal design. The aesthetic serves the client, not the portfolio.
  • One Accountable Team. One contract. One point of contact. One team responsible for architecture, interior design, permitting, and construction oversight.

Residential Arcitect FAQs

How much does custom home design cost in Texas?

Architectural fees are scoped to the project — complexity, site conditions, total construction budget, and the level of service required all factor in. Brickmoon provides a detailed proposal after the initial consultation. Fees are typically structured as a percentage of total construction cost, with clear milestones tied to each design phase.

Do I need a licensed architect for a custom home?

Yes. A licensed architect provides site analysis, structural coordination, code compliance, and construction oversight that protect the investment from start to finish. Attempting to build a custom home without architectural oversight typically costs more in corrections and compromises than it saves in fees.

How does Brickmoon handle design changes mid-process?

Changes are part of every custom home. Brickmoon builds structured review points into each phase so clients can refine direction before moving forward. Changes that affect scope, timeline, or budget are discussed openly before they’re incorporated. Nothing advances to the next phase without explicit client approval.

Can Brickmoon design on a challenging site?

Consistently yes. Steep slopes, flood zones, irregular geometries, restricted access, and environmentally sensitive land — the team has navigated all of them. Difficult sites tend to produce the most compelling homes. Constraints sharpen design thinking in ways that straightforward lots simply don’t.

How much input does the client have throughout the process?

Significant input at every phase. Clients review and approve conceptual design before detailed development begins, and detailed design before permitting. The process surfaces preferences early — when changes are inexpensive — rather than late, when they aren’t. The home reflects the client’s life, not the architect’s default preferences.

What if a client doesn't know what architectural style they want?

That’s the normal starting point. We ask questions about how clients live, what they’ve responded to visually, what’s frustrated them about previous homes. Style emerges from that conversation over the first few meetings. It’s rarely defined in the initial consultation — and it shouldn’t be. The right aesthetic takes time to surface.

Can Brickmoon collaborate with a builder the client has already selected?

Yes. Brickmoon works with client-selected builders regularly and maintains relationships with trusted builder partners across Houston, Austin, and the Hill Country. Clear communication between architect and builder is essential to outcomes — Brickmoon structures that relationship from early design through construction completion.

How does the architecture and interior design integration actually work?

Laura Rickaway’s interior design team joins the project during conceptual design — before the architecture is finalized. Kitchen dimensions develop alongside plumbing layouts. Lighting design informs ceiling structure. Finish selections are chosen in the context of the building architecture. Integration at this level eliminates the rework and visual inconsistency that result when interiors are treated as a separate, later-stage discipline.

What does construction administration include?

Regular site visits to verify the build matches the approved construction documents. Contractor submittals are reviewed, field questions answered, and deviations from the design are flagged before they become permanent. The process concludes with a final walkthrough confirming every element of the home matches the design intent established at the outset.

Does Brickmoon design custom homes outside Houston and Austin?

Yes. Brickmoon operates from two offices — Houston and Wimberley — and serves clients across Texas including the Hill Country, Highland Lakes, San Antonio corridor, and coastal markets. The dual-office structure provides genuine geographic reach without the project management gaps that come from a single office serving a large territory.
